The Canton of Neuchâtel has launched a strategic initiative to bolster Switzerland’s semiconductor industry, awarding CHF 3 million to the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) between 2024 and 2028. This funding will modernize CSEM’s MEMS fabrication line, enhancing capabilities in research, prototyping, and small-scale production.

Aligned with global efforts like the U.S. CHIPS Act and the European Chip Act, the investment aims to strengthen Switzerland’s technological sovereignty and innovation, particularly in medical technology. Semiconductors are essential for:

  • Wearable health monitors (e.g., wrist-based sensors for smartwatches and rings)
  • Implantable medical devices (e.g., pacemakers and drug delivery systems)
  • Lab-on-a-chip diagnostics (for rapid, portable testing)
  • Neurotechnology (e.g., brain-machine interfaces for neurological disorders)
