Bern, August 27, 2026 — In light of the current threat landscape, the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) is placing a strategic focus on drones, drone defense, and robotics. With the Unmanned Systems Centre, the DDPS aims to accelerate the development, testing, and integration of new technologies into the armed forces in collaboration with academia and industry. A new drone battalion and a dedicated drone recruit school will strengthen military capabilities and training. Simultaneously, the DDPS is investing in drones and systems for their defense, aligning its procurement practices with rapid technological advancements. Furthermore, the legal framework and responsibilities are being adapted to the evolving threat landscape.
